Feeling Thankful this Thursday

We’re feeling especially thankful this Thursday because of our awesome summer intern, Marye’ah Young!

Marye’ah started her internship with us just a month ago but since then, she has really become part of the North Newstead family. Fitting right in and jumping right in, she has assisted us tremendously with everything from administrative duties to property management to even rolling up her sleeves and getting involved with our community engagement work.

In the fall, Marye’ah will be returning to Missouri State University in Springfield to finish up her degree in Psychology.

St. Louisans Continue to Support One Another

North Newstead Association wrapped up our free fresh produce program a few weeks ago by delivering over 75 bags of fresh produce to senior residents of the Homer G. Phillips Senior Apartments in the historic Ville neighborhood.

When we pulled up with a van full of fresh produce to just a small line of folks in front of the Homer G. Phillips Senior Apartments, we thought we’d have a long afternoon ahead of us trying to give away all the bags we had brought. However, soon after we started handing out bags of the beautiful produce packed for us by Metro Market St. Louis, these concerns quickly vanished as residents not only called their friends and neighbors to come downstairs to grab their own bags but some residents began to bring bags up to friends and neighbors who could not otherwise pick up a bag.

This love, thoughtfulness, and camaraderie of our community members is what is carrying us through these times, inspiring hope for tomorrow.

Thank you to Invest STL for making all these deliveries possible and to our friends at Metro Market St. Louis for always packing such amazingly fresh produce for residents in North St. Louis. Through this program, NNA was able to deliver over 307 bags of fresh produce directly into the hands of residents.

Back to Nature Project at O’Fallon Park Highlights the Power of Partnerships!

In 2018, North Newstead Association was selected as the community engagement partner on the Back to Nature Grant awarded to O’Fallon Park in North St. Louis. Since then, we’ve worked with partners including the Missouri Department of Conservation, the City of St. Louis’s Parks Department, Missouri Botanical Garden’s Outdoor Youth Corp, Brightside St. Louis, Americorp and so many others on many projects at the park.

We will learn the process to acquire a property from Laura Costello, director of the city’s landbank, the Land Reutilization Authority (LRA).  Hear from two developers about new housing on LRA lots. Yaphett El-Amin, former MO State Rep, president of Efficacy Consulting & Development, has built 40 single family homes in the Vandeventer neighborhood.  Jamilah Nasheed, MO Senator 5^th District, is securing architect drawings and surveys for her proposal to build a 4-plex on an LRA lot.  Learn from these ladies’ experiences.

 

The 2020 Landlord Training is a Northside-Southside Collaboration between North Newstead Association, The Vacancy Collaborative, and Tower Grove Neighborhoods CDC. This FREE training is open to all landlords, property managers, rehabbers, developers, and interested parties. This facility is ADA compliant. The goal of the Landlord & Rehabber Training Program is to stabilize our communities by building an eco-system of educated landlords, rehabbers, and small developers empowered to reduce vacancy and nuisance.  The program will enlist professionals from real estate, property management, law, accounting, preservation, & finance industries to share their knowledge on acquiring and developing real estate and implementing property management best practices.

 

This activity is funded by a HUD Community Development Block Grant via the St. Louis Community Development Administration and coordinated by Tower Grove Neighborhoods CDC, North Newstead Association, and The Vacancy Collaborative.
